Our Mission
Chrysalis Community is a transitional residential program for women in recovery from prostitution and drug addiction. Our mission is to provide safe housing along with an array of support services and educational opportunities for women. Chrysalis’ residential program provides long term secure housing as a haven from the extreme social, psychological and economic factors that drive women to desperate means for survival.

Our Goals
  • Provide a safe, pleasant home environment based on a community living model,
  • Help residents to live honest, sober and self-sufficient lives,
  • Provide education and vocational opportunities,
  • Foster self understanding through personal and spiritual growth,
  • Provide life skill building and maintenance education.

Our Partners

  • Vet Space and the Gainesville Housing Authority
  • Trinity United Methodist Church's Women's Housing Initiative
  • Alachua County Coalition for the Homeless & Hungry

Our History
Chrysalis Community, Inc. originally began in 2002 as the Women’s Housing Initiative, organized and run by a group of concerned citizens and activists who were interested in helping homeless women in Gainesville, FL. The Women’s Housing Initiative joined with the Alachua County Coalition for the Homeless and Hungry, Inc. to further address this issue.

Statistics derived from the Point in Time survey conducted by the Alachua County Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless illuminated the problem that single, non-parenting women who were homeless were greatly underserved. It was also discovered through this survey that a lot of these women also had other issues such as substance abuse and minimal access to job training. The areas of concern in addition to housing that Chrysalis sought to address were; long-term support services to assist in the chemical recovery process; support services to assist with the cessation of prostitution; support in obtaining employment for those with a criminal history; and increasing the availability of health services.

Chrysalis Community developed a relationship with VetSpace and Gainesville Housing Authority in an effort to provide homes for the target population. Referral sources were identified and the board began its effort to secure funding for the salary of the program coordinator/case manager.

Chrysalis obtained the “Challenge” grant from the Department of Children and Family Services in 2003.

Currently, Chrysalis has a small home which provides housing for 2 - 4 women at any given time. A second home is being sought to expand our reach to more women in need in our community.
